The Squat is the most important and challenging event in powerlifting. Why? You have to get a squat in order to move on to the other events.

Choose a weight that you can do easily on a bad day 3 times. Remember that it is not where you start at the meet but where you finish. Get on the board and then have fun.

Get a good brace before leaving the rack, let the weight settle and then step back 3 steps (not giant steps), resettle the weight, re-brace and then hinge at the hips and use the same motion as sitting in a chair – butt first while driving the legs into to the floor.

When you break parallel, come back up by using the glutes, quads and drive the knees out. After the first squat, take a deep breath and go have fun the rest of the meet.
